When you came to our shores, we welcomed you.
You called us brother and told us that we were the children of your king.
You promised us that all you wanted was freedom to worship and live.
We gave you land and showed you how to survive.
You gave us
smallpox,
measles,
and broken promises.

When we resisted you to protect our lands and homes,
You destroyed us and placed bounties on our scalps.

When we agreed to give you more land and made treaties of peace,
You moved us aside like unwanted trash and lied to us.

You gave us new lands and promised that it would be ours,
"Till the rivers stopped flowing and the grass didn't grow."
You lied and broke your written promises.

Like cattle you fenced us in hoping that we would go away.
You sent your missionaries to save our souls.
Christ's words speak of peace and love of fellow man.

Before

Where was your love when you ripped the children from their mothers' arms?
You said it was to teach them to be good "Christians" and help them to learn your ways.
You taught them well!
Now they are just like you and have forgotten who they are.
We broke our promises to our children to protect them.

After

All those broken promises where does it end?
They will always come back to us.
We hate the white man for what he has done to us.
Our children hate their elders for not protecting them.
Broken promises, broken dreams, broken lifes.
Broken promises like shattered glass buried deep in the memory,
Sharp as the jagged edge ready to cut deep into broken hearts.
